Overview
· Third, nickname. Third child in the family (only authorized 3rds can participate in public life) “how else could a Third like me go to school (Card 7).
· Third is a nickname, but also an insult.
· Ender is smart in Math and also Tech saavy.

Monitor removal
· distrusts adults “this wont hurt” is a lie – adults lie to hide a painful truth.
· painful, shakes, muscles tense and he has traumatic experience. Dr. believes they almost killed him
· Monitor gone means that he believes that he was not good enough.
· Learn monitor transmitted information about him to Colonel Graff and Mojor Anderson – pain, see and hear what he does.
· Monitor left in for 3 years.
Fight with Sitlson
· Climax – Beats up Stilson – he makes a point so that the other kids will not continue to bully him.
Theme
· Compassion – doesn’t want to be like Peter.
· Ruthlessness – threatens classmates; breaks “unspoken rule of manly warfare” – don’t “kick” a person when they are down.
· Using games to learn about real life – play fights that get serious – fighting with Peter taught Ender to fight and defend himself.

Overview of the chapter:
· Peter is mean, dangerous, ruthless, manipulative (messes with heads). He is like Stilson in his aggression, but he is also mentally and emotionally abusive – he is smart.
· Peter uses his size and physical strength to dominate
· Valentine uses reason, emotion, authority (parents) to appeal to Peter.
· Ender goes along with both to keep the peace and not make it worse for himself.
· He makes Ender play Buggers vs Astronauts
· Ender thinks about Buggers perspective while wearing the Bugger mask.
· Ender tells us that they are not brothers (in the traditional sense), not even friends.
· Valentine is Ender’s “monitor” or protector from Peter.
· Ender tries to show Peter he is capable of hurting another by showing him the blood on his foot. Peter doesn’t care.
· Peter manipulates Ender and Valentine by telling them that he will hurt Ender, but then pretends like it is a joke.
Reasons why Peter dislikes Ender
· Ender is younger and smarter
· Valentine and Ender are a reminder of his failure
Wiggin kids are smart
